I'm not a massage therapist, nor do I do yoga. According to the reviews on his website, these seem to be the most enthusiastic fans of Mr. Gilliland (though you'll also find a review there from Streams-of-Time's own Nancy). But even I can appreciate the calm beauty of this album.
This is not an easy album to review track by track. The music is a seamless whole, from "Prelude to Dawn" through to "Stars Fade to Dawn". Piano solos have, by their nature, the potential to become passive background noise. Mr. Gilliland has avoided this by creating music that while very relaxing, still demands your attention. Occasional orchestration adds to the depth and richness of his pieces. You won't find any soulless pounding of the keys in any track on this album. Each piece conveys emotion, calls upon the heart as well as the ear. This would be a wonderful selection for meditation, as well as being perfect music for a lazy Summer afternoon. It even has the potential to improve a long car ride. And if, like me, you enjoy falling asleep to music, add this album to your collection. I have.
